What to Look for in a Roofing Contractor

Are you in need of a roofing contractor? Make sure you get the right person for the job! 🧐

Check out our tips for finding the right roofing contractor and look forward to quality results. 🔨

  1. Its always best to go with a local contractor that has an office near you. See if you can find Google Reviews of roofing contractors near you.
  2. Ask your friends and family if they know any roofing contractors and see if they have any recomendations.
  3. Look up their Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) license.  You can search via MHIC license number, trade name, or owners name. The larger the MHIC number the newer the contractor. Be weary of contractors that state they have been doing business for a long period of time but have a large MHIC number 130,000 and up.
  4. Ask for their Certificate of Insurance (COI). All licensed contractors are required to be insured with General Liability (GL) and Workman's Comp (WC) and most have a $2 million GL and $1M WC policy.

What to avoid in a roofing contractor:

  • sales person knocks on your door and offers to work with your home owners insurance company to repair or replace your roof. You could get stuck paying a hefty bill.
  • contractors that are not on time for their initial assessment. If they are not punctual the first time, this may be a sign that you may have timing issues to complete your project.
  • making a decision soley on price. It is important to compare ‘apples to apples’ estimates to see which is the best value and piece of mind when someone is working on your home.

What to look for in a roofing contractor:

Happy couple
  • Good reputation. Excellent reviews, word of mouth referral, experience in business and construction, involved in the community.
  • Physical location. You can visit their store for more information on roofing products and meet their staff.
  • MHIC license. Maryland licensed contractors are held accountable by state law. If a contractor is not licensed, you will have little to no recourse if the job is poorly done. Always go with a licensed contractor.
  • Accessibility. Do they respond to your phone calls and emails? Are they knowledgeable, experienced and provide answers to all your questions? Do they care about you and your home?
